Volunteers clean up the Hilltop

Somersworth, NH — It was a day for spring cleaning throughout the Hilltop City Saturday as hundreds scattered around downtown to clean up streets, parks, and a number of other spots in between.

Community members spent time cleaning the city Saturday for the annual Spirit Up Somersworth Community Cleanup day. Organizing from the middle school, volunteers came ready to spend the day beautifying grounds throughout the city raking, picking up litter, and planting.

"We've got pretty good coverage," Maureen Jackman, director of Somersworth Youth Connection, said.

By about 10 a.m., she said there had been approximately 200 people visit the school for instructions on where to go to help with the cleaning efforts.

While she said the number of helpers was down from past years likely due to so many opening days for local sports teams, she said the turnout was still a strong one.

"It is a great day," she said. "It's about family and community coming together."

Owen Clark, 8, was doing his part to help out along with his siblings, Ryan, 4 and Maley, 5, and their mother, Kari Clark.

"We love our city," she said.

Maley, enjoying a snack while they inquired about the next spot in town they could clean, said she was having a lot of fun.

Downtown, friends Ashly Lavery, 12; Rachel Wattimena, 12; and Dayna Keen, 11; were excited to be cleaning on such a nice Spring day.

"We think the city is really dirty," Dayna said.

The three girls are part of the SYC and said they found out through their group.

"We've found some interesting things," Dayna's mother Angela Keen, said.

Following cleanup efforts, which began around 8 a.m., a lunch was offered at the middle school to those who came out to volunteer their time.

"We come together to share a meal after the event," Jackman said.She also said a lot of local businesses had participated by offering gift certificates and items as part of a raffle for participants, including a 50-inch television from Tradeport USA."Spirit Up Day is really just a fun day of service for the community," she said.
