SOMERSWORTH – One downside to the warmer weather is the vast array of trash tossed about by winter storms that is now visible along roadways; but not for long.
On Saturday May 9, residents will gather for the 8th Annual Spirit Up Somersworth Clean Up Day, a collaborative effort between Somersworth Youth Connection (SYC), the city and other volunteer groups.
Maureen Jackman, SYC Coordinator, said the event typically draws between 200 and 250 people.
"Last year we collected something like two tons of trash," Jackman said."It was pretty phenomenal."
Jackman said she is hoping for a bigger turnout this year because the high winds and storms this past winter played havoc with the recycling buckets. "Stuff was blowing all over the place," she said.
The event begins with registration at 7:30 a.m. at Somersworth Middle Schools (SMS) where teams and individuals register and pick up supplies.
"We supply the bags and gloves; for areas where there are no sidewalks I have orange vests," Jackman said."We have some rakes and pruning shears, but encourage people to bring their own tools as well."
According to Jackman, SYC issued a challenge to the middle school and there are more than bragging rights at stake. "The homeroom with the most students participating will get an ice cream party. The advisory program with the best turnout will get a free breakfast," she said.
Jackman said Somersworth Public Works is instrumental in bringing all the debris to Malley Farm and driving around the city to pick up all the bags volunteers fill during the cleanup.
Waste Management donates two large containers so that public works can dump the trash. Area pizza businesses donate pizza for the lunch and the American Legion supplies water and juice.
Everyone who signs in and helps with the cleanup gets a ticket to the free luncheon followed by the block party at the middle school from noon to 2 p.m.
"We really want it to have that block-party feel," Jackman said. "We come together as a community and do this big cleanup and now are celebrating."
There will be live entertainment from two acoustic performers and displays by Waste Management, the Sustainability Committee, Public Works for their Adopt-a-spot program and public safety.
"We will have a "Touch-a-truck" for the kids," Jackman said. "Police, fire, public works, Waste Management and American Ambulance will have vehicles to explore."

Jackman said there are also some raffles, "TradePort is donating a plasma TV and many local restaurants have donated gift certificates."
